Back in January, we were asked by a client to bid on a Bonita Springs structured cabling project starting in the spring. The project would consist of wiring for door access, speakers, camera’s, coaxial and ethernet cable. Schultz was awarded the contract and our techs worked through the COVID pandemic to successfully complete the job.

We decided to use category 6 solid copper cable for the ethernet, camera’s and speaker wiring and RG6 for the coax.

The roof was wood frame with a somewhat open attic which allowed us to use hooks on the beams. Careful planning made the wiring pulls easier.

The speakers required category 6 wiring rather than traditional 2 wire setup. This is because we used a state of the art digital speaker system on this project. Digital speakers provide several advantages over traditional analog. Individual speakers can be controlled via a variety of computers or cell phone app. Each speaker can have various settings such as volume, music source, timers etc.

Our POE camera’s have a similar setup with the speakers. They each require a category 6 home run back to the IT room rack, in this case connecting to the DVR.

There are some really amazing security measures in the palm of your hands with the use of Shultz’s POE camera system. With an app on your phone you can be anywhere in the world and in real time, view, rotate, pan or zoom from any camera in the system.

New structures are usually easier to wire than existing structures for several reasons. In new buildings, the path of the wire is made while the construction process is going on. Compared to sometimes doing a lot of fabricating, cutting walls drilling and pulling when working with older buildings and wiring.

If the building is older and the business is upgrading to Category 6 wiring, the old wiring may not be a home run. Meaning the wire may not run directly back to the IT closet but might go to the next jack or even spliced in the ceiling. If this is the case, there is going to be a lot of ceiling or attic work.

We were recently called to evaluate a problem with the Fiber Optics broadband services at a gated neighborhood in Naples, Fl. The job presented several unique challenges.

We had service in one building and no service in the next building which was several hundred feet away. There was no tracer line in the Fiber Optics cable which made locating the cut challenging.

First we attempted to insert a metal fish tape into the conduit and tried tracing it that way. We traced it all the way to the edge of a road where the locate stopped but there was no vault. We commenced searching the area for any vaults that we could find and we came upon the damaged cable in the picture. After repairing the damaged cable the broadband issue was still there.

So we realized there had to be a vault that was buried near where we lost our locate. So our techs broke out the shovels and started digging.

After the techs did quite a bit of digging we finally discovered the buried Fiber Optics vault buried about 3 feet under the surface. Schultz has seen this happen several times before so we had an idea what we were looking for.

To repair the problem, we dug out the vault, raised it to the surface and pulled the Fiber up with it. We placed a new piece of Fiber through the conduit and the broadband troubles were fixed. The customer was extremely pleased and we were happy to finally provide a long term solution to the neighborhoods broadband problems.

Many other companies would have given up after they found that there was not a tracer in the cable or even after being unable to locate the buried vault.
